WHAT ARE DENTAL BRACES?

Are you struggling with teeth that are crooked or crowded? If you’re dreaming of a straighter smile that boosts your confidence, dental braces can help. Braces are orthodontic devices that help align and straighten your teeth, improving your bite and enhancing your overall oral health. They consist of different components, all working together to gradually shift your teeth into their desired positions over a period of time.

WHY CHOOSE BRACES?

At Purity Dental, we help our patients get straighter, healthier smiles using advanced orthodontics and custom-fitted braces. Our dentists are equipped with years of experience that allow us to work on your smile and give you the best solution for straighter teeth.

Our dental braces and other orthodontic appliances are a great way to straighten a crooked or misaligned smile. They work by consistently placing pressure on your teeth in order to move them into the ideal position for your smile. As your bite changes, you’ll have to come in for follow-up appointments to have your braces tightened.

DO YOU NEED BRACES?

Ever thought braces are just for kids? This treatment is applicable for patients of all ages for a range of reasons (in fact, adults show some of the best success rates too). Here are just a few of the most obvious signs that you may need braces:

  • list icon Gaps between teeth
  • list icon Overbite / Underbite / Crossbite
  • list icon Poorly positioned jaws / TMJ Disorder

TYPES OF BRACES

We have 3 main types of braces available, depending on the severity of your needs, your budget and lifestyle.

  • list iconMetal Braces
This traditional method uses metal braces and wires, and is the most affordable type of brace. Over the years, the wires have gotten noticeably more subtle in appearance.
  • list iconClear Aligners
Unlike other braces, Clear Aligners are transparent, removable plastic aligners that should be replaced every few weeks. This treatment is only valid for teens and adults with mild orthodontic conditions, however.
  • list iconClear Braces
Designed similarly to metal braces, the wires used in clear braces match the colour of your teeth, or are even clear.

OUR PROCESS FOR BRACES

  • list icon In your initial consultation, dental x-rays and impressions of your mouth will be taken in order to design perfectly-fitted braces for your teeth.
  • list icon In your next “bonding” appointment, the metal brackets will be precisely attached and positioned onto your teeth. This will take roughly 2 hours.
  • list icon A device will be used to keep your mouth dry while your braces are attached to your teeth using an adhesive that is bonded using a curing light.
  • list icon The archwire will then be placed by our dentist through the braces and held together using ligature bands.
  • list icon You will have to attend follow-up appointments, roughly every 4 to 8 weeks, to get your braces adjusted as your smile changes.

ADJUSTING TO BRACES

For simpler cases, straighter teeth can be achieved in as little as 6 months! Commonly we often see 12-24 months. In more complex cases, this can extend up to 3 years, so it’s quite necessary to learn how to adjust to braces.

Firstly, daily flossing and brushing after each meal using fluoride toothpaste is very important as food particles tend to get easily stuck in the wires. Our dentist will help outline how to efficiently brush and floss your teeth during your appointment. We recommend staying away from sugary, sticky or hard foods that will easily get caught in your braces and will be hard to remove.

If you take part in sports, we do recommend investing in a mouthguard to wear during to prevent any abrasions. We offer custom-fitted mouthguards at Purity Dental so feel free to bring this up with our dental practitioners if you feel like you may need one. Once your treatment period is over, you will have a fixed retainer wire, and a removable retainer for nighttime wear. You’ll be able to enjoy all the perks and confidence of a straighter smile.
