When Do You Need Dental Implants?
Need any of your teeth replaced? Dental Implants are a great way to do so. But when exactly is the best time to do so and in what situations should you avoid getting implants? Read the article below for more information!
Age
Dental implants are only recommended for patients whose facial features are fully formed. Hence, you usually have to be at least 18 years or older in order to qualify for dental implants. The procedure is a safe one but full development and maturation are a prerequisite.
How many dental implants?
There is no minimum requirement of how many missing teeth are needed for implants. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or a set of them. But if you’re looking at larger restorations such as dentures or bridges then a minimum number of missing teeth is required.
Bone health
Another requirement for getting dental implants is having enough bone for support. If you wait too long before replacing a missing tooth, the bone in that area is at risk of shrinking or resorbing making it more challenging to place an implant.
You may need a bone graft surgery in order to strengthen the area. Any pre-existing conditions such as gum disease must also be treated before implants are placed.
