How Often Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for a healthy smile and overall well-being. Regular scale and cleans are central to your preventative dental care routine. But how often should you be booking checkups?

If Your Gums and Teeth are Healthy

As a general rule, people with healthy teeth and gums book a routine check-up and clean every six months. This is to prevent any dental disease from becoming a significant problem. During your visit, our dentist at Purity Dental Mulgrave, will check all your teeth to ensure there are no new cavities, perform a routine oral cancer screening, measure the health and strength of your gums and clean away any soft plaque and calcified tartar that accumulated since your last appointment. Since tartar cannot be removed with brushing or flossing (it harbours infectious bacteria). Therefore, professional cleaning is needed to remove it.

Some people tend to have heavier stains or tartar than others. If that’s the case, extra cleaning is needed.

“But I Brush and Floss Every Day”

Even if you have great oral care habits, there will nearly always be some dental plaque left behind. The bacteria can then calcify into tartar. Over time, tartar deposits get larger which contains bacteria that trigger serious gum problems such as gum infections and bone loss.

Professional dental cleanings remove buildup from areas that flossing can’t physically reach. In most cases, six months is the general time frame to come in and get your routine preventive oral hygiene visit.

What About Gum Disease?

Active periodontal infections (gum infections) require more rigorous professional treatment. Since the disease lies deep under your gum tissues, you’ll need to have your teeth cleaned as often as every 3-4 months. Periodontal maintenance appointments shouldn’t be skipped; otherwise, you risk going into relapse and the problem becoming more severe.

The Importance of Dental Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings can offer numerous benefits such as:

  • The build-up of plaque and tartar can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated. This build-up can be removed through dental cleanings.
  • A thorough cleaning helps eliminate bacteria that cause bad breath, giving you a fresher mouth.
  • Our dental professionals can detect oral health issues like cavities, gum disease and oral cancer during your routine check-ups.
  • Regular cleanings are a part of preventative care. This reduces the likelihood of developing more severe dental problems that are costly to fix.

While the general recommendation is a dental cleaning every 6 months, individual cases may require more or less frequent visits based on your specific condition. Consult with one of our experienced dentists to create a personalised plan that ensures your teeth remain healthy and your smile stays radiant for years to come!
