Caring for Your New Dental Crowns or Veneers

You’ve just completed your recent treatment, and for the first time, you have a new crown or veneers. Whether you underwent full mouth reconstruction or a smile makeover, you want your new investment to last as long as possible. Our Purity Dental Mulgrave dentist are here to share specific steps you can take to get the most out of your new dental work.

Floss Daily

Many people are scared that flossing around a crown or veneer will cause their restoration to pop off accidentally. Not so. In fact, if floss pulls your crown off, it was going to come out regardless. You would rather that happen at a time like this, than during a meal.

Flossing actually helps your crowns and veneers stay on longer. That’s because it prevents plaque biofilm from accumulating around the margins, with the potential of causing decay underneath. Should that happen, you would need to have the entire restoration replaced.

Consider Wearing a Night Guard

Do you tend to clench or grind your teeth while you sleep? Wearing a protective night guard can help to avoid accidental chipping or wear on your new porcelain restorations. A night guard fits over your teeth like a retainer, only it’s thicker. It keeps your teeth from fully engaging against one another, and thus from wearing down.

Schedule Regular Checkups

Regular check up and cleans at Purity Dental are prime opportunities to thoroughly clean your teeth, the edges of your restorations, and screen for potential warning signs that something is wrong. People with healthy teeth and gums usually need a checkup every six months; if you’ve had a history of gum disease, plan on 3-4 times per year.

At Purity Dental we’re committed to helping you get the most out of your smile, no matter what phase of life you’re in. Call our dentists at Purity Dental today for your next appointment!
