Anxious about your upcoming dental appointment? There’s no need to worry – because with general anaesthesia, those days of dental anxiety and fear can be a thing of the past.

At Purity Dental, we understand dental anxiety all too well. That’s why we offer different sedation dentistry options, including general anaesthesia, to ensure you don’t delay or avoid seeking dental care. With our highly experienced team of dentists and qualified anaesthetists specialising in sleep dentistry, you can say goodbye to dental fear and get the care you need without pain or discomfort.

What is General Anaesthesia?

General anaesthesia is a sleep dentistry solution that can relax your body and put you in a sleep-like state, helping you get through your dental visit with ease. In this induced state of unconsciousness, you won’t be able to respond to touch or voices. And the best part? You won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure!

So, how does general anaesthesia work? It includes a mix of intravenous medication and gases, which will be given to you either by an injection or through a mask, and before you even know it, you will drift off into a peaceful sleep.

In dentistry, general anaesthesia is typically used if:

  • The patient has severe dental anxiety, where even the thought of the dentist sounds daunting.
  • You have to undergo complex or multiple dental procedures.

What are the Benefits of General Anaesthesia?

  • Ensures a more comfortable and smooth dental experience by putting you in a state of unconsciousness and eliminating pain.
  • Allows you to complete multiple dental procedures in one visit, saving you from multiple trips to our dental clinic.
  • It helps our dentists carry out treatment with precision and effectiveness. General anaesthesia is very beneficial for those who struggle to keep still or have nervous system issues.
  • You won’t have any painful or unpleasant memories of the dental treatment/s you undergo because you will be unaware of any pain.
  • It helps suppress the gag reflex.

Cost of General Anaesthesia for Dental Work

The cost of general anaesthesia and other sleep dentistry options can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the procedure you undergo, treatment time and even the level of sedation.

At Purity Dental, the cost for mild sedation may vary between $200-$400. This cost will increase if your dental treatment requires you to be sedated for longer.

What are the Types of Sleep Dentistry?

In addition to general anaesthesia, we provide three other types of sleep dentistry solutions to ensure a comfortable and effective dental experience.

  1. Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a colourless gas delivered through a mask. It can leave you in a highly relaxed state, reducing your anxiety, but unlike with general anaesthesia, you will remain conscious with this form of sedation.
  2. Oral Sedation: With this form of sedation dentistry, you will be sedated by taking a pill or a liquid. It will put you in a drowsy, relaxed and sleepy state, and it may also be combined with other methods of sedation for enhanced effectiveness.
  3. IV Sedation: This is a stronger form of sedation than the others, leaving you drowsy and unaware of your surroundings. IV sedation is injected directly into your vein and takes effect pretty quickly.

While general anaesthesia is a safe and effective solution, like any other medical procedure, it’s not entirely without side effects. However, you don’t need to worry because our friendly dentists will walk you through everything you need to know, from possible side effects to precautions you must take and what you can expect.
