Can Implant Support Dentures Be Removed?

Dentist-explaining-implant-support-dentures-to-old-patient

Dentures are a popular and great way to replace missing teeth. However, dentures can slip around in your mouth, fall out at the most inconvenient times and cause discomfort because they can be unstable and loose with wear.

If you want a tooth replacement solution that provides enhanced stability and comfort, then implant-supported dentures could be for you. Think dentures but with added stability from dental implants placed into your jawbone.

Also known as overdentures or snap-on dentures, implant-supported dentures combine the best of both worlds (conventional dentures and dental implants). With strategically placed dental implants, they sit more securely on your jawbone without shifting around.

What are the Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures?

Our Implant-Supported Dentures Process at Purity Dental

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, our dentist will assess your oral health to determine if you are a good candidate for our implant-supported dentures. We may also use X-rays and 3D to ensure you have sufficient bone density. To be eligible for this procedure, you need to meet the following criteria:

Implant Placement

Your dental implants will be surgically inserted into your jawbone during this stage. It is typically performed under general anaesthesia to ensure comfort and a pain-free experience. We will use dental X-rays of your jawbone to place your implants precisely into your jawbone.

The implants will then be left to heal and fuse with the jawbone. Healing typically takes up to 3 months but may vary depending on the individual. During this period, a healing cap will be used to cover your implants.

Placement of the Implant-Supported Denture

Once your implants have healed and your custom-made prosthetic teeth (overdentures) have been fabricated, our dentists will have them fitted in place. You can now enjoy a secure, natural-looking and functional smile.

Are Implant-Supported Dentures Removable?

Implant-supported dentures are of two types: fixed and removable.

Fixed Implant-Supported Dentures

Fixed implant-supported dentures are permanently attached to the dental implants inserted into your jawbone. As a result, you won’t be able to remove your prosthesis (denture) from your mouth after having them fitted. Only a dentist will be able to remove your prosthesis.

These fixed implant-supported dentures offer strength and a comfortable fit, allowing you to smile confidently and enjoy your favourite meals. It is an excellent long-term solution that provides a natural-looking and functional smile.

Removable Implant-Supported Dentures

Also referred to as snap-on dentures or overdentures, they are removable implant-supported dentures. They feature special ‘clip-on’ abutments that allow you to remove your prosthetic teeth. Despite being removable, these implant-supported dentures offer enhanced stability and a secure solution, unlike traditional dentures.

With this, you can remove the denture whenever you need it for cleaning and maintenance or simply whenever you want to. You don’t have to visit the dentist to have it removed.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Removable Implant-Supported Dentures

By caring for your implant-supported dentures, you’ll be able to enjoy a functional and beautiful smile for longer and reduce the chances of complications or dental issues.

The best part is that cleaning and maintaining your implant-supported dentures is easy. All you need to do is to stick to a consistent dental hygiene routine. Here are some things that you can do:

Clean your implant-supported dentures using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. This can reduce the risk of bacteria accumulating on your implant-supported dentures and cavities.

There are hard-to-reach areas in your mouth your toothbrush fails to reach, where food particles can accumulate. A water flosser can reach these areas and effectively remove decay and cavity-causing bacteria from breeding in your mouth. Some flossers even come with tiny brushes that are designed specifically for cleaning dental implants.

Your removable implant-supported dentures need daily cleaning, too. Soaking them in a denture cleaning solution every day is one of the best ways to disinfect your dentures, remove any plaque buildup and keep them soft.

Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash at least once a day to reduce harmful bacteria in your mouth.

Schedule regular visits to our dental clinic every 6 months for a check-up and professional cleaning. During these check-ups, we will evaluate your dental restorations and identify and intercept any issues early on. We will also clean your dental appliances and the surrounding gum tissues.
